Hot forging vs. machining from bar: why bearing rings are forged

Bearing rings can in principle be machined directly from bar stock — so why do the world's bearing makers insist on forged and rolled rings?

Grain flow. Hot forging and ring rolling align the steel's grain structure circumferentially around the ring, following the direction of load. That gives forged rings superior fatigue life compared with rings cut from bar, where grain lines are severed by the tool path.

Material yield. A forged ring starts near net shape — dramatically less steel is machined away, which matters when bearing-grade 100Cr6 / SAE 52100 steel is a major cost driver.

Microstructure control. In-house annealing and normalizing after forging sets the spheroidized structure that bearing manufacturers need for their own hardening processes.
